Anaerobic Adhesive
Anaerobic adhesives cure when the air is excluded, e.g. when a bolt is home in a thread. They are often Used generally with metal to reinforce a mechanical joint assembly. They are used to lock threads or join a bearing into a shaft. They cure when the air (oxygen) is excluded, thus the term anaerobic: Without oxygen; and in the presence of metal ions. So, when some is placed on a nut being wound into a bolt it will cure with excellent shear strength. On top of preventing loosening it can also prevent or slow corrosion. It will make for a leak proof seal. Anaerobic glues take minutes to set and full cure time is generally 24 hours.
They come in different strengths and most can be removed by direct application of very high temperatures.
Sometimes glue like Mister Glue is referred to as an anaerobic glue because it 'looks' that way. It actually is not. Other glue that may be stated as such but are not are: super glue, Krazy Glue, The Last Glue, Max One, Miracle Glue, Pasco Fix and numerous other cyanoacrylates.
I have seen a couple of website that describe this type of glue as anaerobic but it is a misnomer - they react to surface moisture - see our section on cyanoacrylate adhesives below.
